The Dawoodi
Bohra community is a small Shia' sect of Muslims based
predominately in India. In accordance with Islam's
emphasis on education, the spiritual leader of this
community Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin, (known as the Dai)
founded an educational institute in 1814. This institute
evolved into a university specializing in Arabic and
Islamic studies, the sciences and liberal arts. With one
campus in Surat, India and the other in Karachi,
Pakistan, Al Jamea tus Saifiyah serves as the primary
learning institute for the Dawoodi Bohras and attracts
students from all over the world.
After the Fatemi Imams in Egypt chose seclusion in the
12th century, their Dais, their vicergents, in Yemen and
then later in India sustained the Fatemi faith and
culture. For hundreds of years now, these Dais have
acted as the hub for the educational, philisophical,
cultural and economical growth of the community. Al
Mawaid Al Saifiyah is an outcome of this tradition.
